Collaborating to Modernize FreeBSD for High-Performance Computing
We are a community network dedicated to advancing FreeBSD’s HPC ecosystem, building modern tools, and fostering collaboration.
Who We Are

We are an open network of developers and contributors working together to strengthen FreeBSD as a platform for High-Performance Computing (HPC) and scientific workloads.
Our mission is to modernize FreeBSD’s HPC stack, improve ecosystem support, and make FreeBSD a viable choice for cutting-edge research and large-scale computing environments.
We are not associated with the FreeBSD Project or any other official FreeBSD groups/networks. We are an independent open Network, hosted and administered by GenericRikka.
What We’re Working On
Our current main focus is on updating, maintaining, and modernizing FreeBSD’s HPC software stack.
This includes work on:
- The Slurm workload manager and related cluster scheduling tools
- PMIx, PRRTE, and MPI implementations
- HPC regression testing frameworks such as ReFrame
- Packaging and ports support for scientific and parallel computing libraries
By improving these foundations, we aim to make FreeBSD a stronger player in academic and enterprise HPC.
How We Work
Our development and coordination happens primarily on our GitLab instance.
- GitLab is the central hub for source code, issue tracking, merge requests, and technical documentation.
-
Blogs & Reports
provide more context:
- Developer Blog – personal devlogs, behind-the-scenes updates
- Monthly Status Reports – short, factual, status updates
We believe in transparency, collaboration, and documenting our progress for both developers and the wider FreeBSD community.
